How did the geography of Greece impact on Greek religion?

And how did it differ from the geography of Egypt?

Chosen Answer:

Interesting question. Of course, everything we say will be pure guesses because we did not live during those periods. And there are tons of people arguing this way and that about how and who they worshipped and when, based on artifacts, some writings, and a lot of conjecture. But we still try. The Egyptians were living in a paradise in regards to being able to protect their homes, in comparison to the other cultures of the time, from human invaders. The Nile was predictable and fertile. Still, the geography was always changing (sands shifted, riverbanks changed), and this unpredictability probably had more impact on their religion than anything. How this geographical information had them focused on life after death is all guesswork. Certainly no early humans were strangers to the seeming whims of life and death.

Greece was an entirely different ecosystem, but again, the unpredictability of the earthquakes and the sea’s bounty or destruction had the people using religion to try and understand the forces around them.
